Wolverhampton Compact is a commitment between the local authority and the voluntary and community sector in the city which aims to ensure people work better together for the community. In the Local Compact of the Year Category, the judges said they were impressed with Wolverhampton Compact, which demonstrated evidence of progress towards meeting the outcomes identified in their action plan, including the establishment of a new network bringing Compact Champions together. Compact Champions have the responsibility for making compacts known, understood and used, and in the Compact Champion of the Year Category, Wolverhampton’s shining light was consultation and community involvement officer at the council Sam Axtell. The judges noted that Sam’s active involvement in compact initiatives in the city shows the invaluable work and influence that Compact Champions can have on compact working. She was found to have a strong track record and her influence can be seen in a number of recent pieces of work such as the refresh of Wolverhampton’s Partnership’s Community Engagement Strategy. Leader of the council Neville Patten said: “Wolverhampton City Council is totally committed to helping to ensure the success of the Wolverhampton Compact as a statement of our determination to engage with the voluntary sector within the city in helping to shape front-line services, and helping to deliver them. “The excellence awards are the latest recognition that the compact has deservedly received since its inception, they are thoroughly deserved, and we wish the compact every continued success.” Chair of Wolverhampton Partnership Jon Crockett added: “As chair of Wolverhampton Partnership as well as chief executive of Wolverhampton City Primary Care Trust, I would like to offer my congratulations on yet another successful year for the compact in Wolverhampton. “The external recognition is important because it demonstrates how successful we have been in Wolverhampton in developing and delivering our compact and the initiatives that support it. “Our challenge is to maintain this progress and to go on to further enhance the partnership working in Wolverhampton between the statutory and third sector for the benefit of the people we all serve.” At its own Compact Week event following the awards ceremony, the Compact Roadshow was launched which is a year long event of raising awareness of the compact around Wolverhampton.
